Through Ryan’s Lens
In Memory of my son, Ryan Joseph
Humble, caring, generous, loving and loyal – Ryan had these qualities in spades. As a son, brother, grandson, friend, particularly to elderly people, and a devoted uncle to two nephews and one niece, whom he called his children, Ryan gave everything to these relationships and was, simply put, a kind human being. He effortlessly lived life true to these words: “Do no harm to anyone, ever.”
In his essence, Ryan was an existentialist, believing that each of us are free and responsible for creating meaning in our own lives. He was not a social person, but his conversations with others were meaningful and inspiring. The passion Ryan had for knowledge (he always had a book in hand and read Encyclopaedias for fun!), together with his boundless intellect, led him to acquire two university degrees: Political Science and International Relations & Global Affairs (Magna Cum Laude). His thirst to learn extended into teaching himself Information Technology (IT) and those who knew him often called him “Google”, as Ryan always had answers that were backed with facts. However, parallel to Ryan’s drive for quenching his cerebral desiderata ran his love for Jamaica, a yearning to be amongst nature and “a sense of wonder toward the world.” (Astronomer Carl Sagan, one of Ryan’s favourite authors.)
The connection Ryan felt with animals, the ocean, plants, and our planet in general, was profound, even as a child. He was given his first camera at 12 years old and spent the next 21 years building on a hobby that could easily be mistaken as his career. Indeed, in November 2018 Ryan began putting together his best photos for an exhibition to be able to give people a glimpse into the world through his lens. Sadly, he passed away in February 2019. Five years later, we are all honouring his life through his photos.
We thank you for supporting ‘Through Ryan’s Lens’, for your contribution and for holding Ryan’s memory within your hearts.
With love,
Rosa Joseph-Phillips
